Whether in trade or finance, transactions in the global economy have increased dramatically and changed radically since the early 2000's. The interdependence among economies has surged and become more intense. Policies and decisions that shape the economy are increasingly more complex and diverse, involving numerous intangible factors, and the intended goals reach beyond income and wealth to include economic structure and sophistication ("capabilities"). Better-connected nodes like trade, investment and finance in such networks represent activities that offer promising benefits (growth prospect) but also are subject to more complex risks. Many standard models are inapt for analyzing today's situation. Evidence and examples pointing into this direction are abound. It is argued that the AHP/ANP offers a suitable approach to reflect the complexity of today's economic structure.
